SoftLayer Blurs Resource Lines with Flex Images

Posted by: Jennifer  :  Category: Budget Hosting, Cheap Web Hosting, Dedicated Hosting, Reseller Hosting, Shared Hosting, Top 10 Hosting, VPS Hosting

(The Hosting News) – The lines between physical and virtual IT resources are being erased with the introduction of SoftLayer Flex Images. Flex Images allow users to capture, replicate, and store an image of a cloud or dedicated server, and then deploy the image on either type of computing environment. Capabilities traditionally in the domain of virtual infrastructure, including the ability to quickly clone and reload servers, are extended to dedicated servers, along with cross-platform compatibility and simple migration between physical and virtual environments.

“Flex Images provide our customers with unprecedented flexibility and scalability,” said Simon West, Chief Marketing Officer for SoftLayer. “The ability to provision and automate server images seamlessly between cloud and dedicated computing environments empowers users to easily build out their IT environments while being able to quickly meet changing requirements. Our customers can focus on the purpose of their application and then on the right technology solution—with the freedom to move between or integrate technologies as needed.”

Flex Images is a key differentiator for SoftLayer—like the company’s network, portal and automated platform—available to all customers. These new capabilities help showcase SoftLayer’s ongoing innovation efforts, which help blur the distinctions between cloud and dedicated computing environments while offering customers the highest possible levels of control and scalability.

“Flex Images have been a massive time saver,” said Aaron McKee, VP of engineering for Struq, an early beta customer. “We love being able to effortlessly scale and manage our infrastructure. This really sets SoftLayer apart from the competition because traditional cloud systems just don’t have this type of flexibility and performance. The feature has cut down new server deployment by several hours per server, which has made recent expansion bursts at Struq much easier. This is definitely a better way to deploy and manage IT resources in the cloud.”

Key features and benefits of Flex Images include:

  • Universal images that can be used interchangeably on dedicated or cloud systems
  • Unified image library for archiving, managing, sharing, and publishing images
  • Greater flexibility and higher scalability
  • Rapid and easy migration
  • Available via SoftLayer’s management portal and API

Flex Images is available immediately to SoftLayer customers as a public beta. General availability is expected in the second quarter. For more information, please visit www.softlayer.com/FlexImageBeta.

SoftLayer® Invests in European Operation

Posted by: Jennifer  :  Category: Budget Hosting, Cheap Web Hosting, Dedicated Hosting, Reseller Hosting, Shared Hosting, Top 10 Hosting, VPS Hosting

(The Hosting News) – Expanding its global reach and IT hosting capabilities, SoftLayer® Technologies today announced the opening of its new European headquarters and data center in Amsterdam. Over the next two years the company will invest approximately $75 million in its European operations, which also includes new network PoPs in Amsterdam, London, and Frankfurt.

New and existing customers across Europe, especially the large corporate enterprises, Internet savvy small and medium sized businesses (SMBs), social media and gaming start-ups that make up SoftLayer’s core customer base, will be able to leverage these new capabilities, which will officially ‘go live’ at the beginning of November. European customers can now easily order SoftLayer’s unique cloud, dedicated, and managed hosting solutions.

“This launch strengthens our foothold across Europe by bringing our services closer to our existing and expanding customer base,” said Lance Crosby, Chief Executive Officer for SoftLayer. “Proximity to our customers is crucial to driving innovation and improving a better end-user experience. Currently more than 50 percent of our business is done outside North America. Our continued expansion into international markets gives our customers more control and flexibility in the way they manage and build out their cloud infrastructures and services.”

Today, with nearly half of its 23,000 customers coming from more than 140 countries, SoftLayer has an established international customer base and European demand for SoftLayer’s IT hosting services continues to soar across a variety of industries and countries. Companies like Ultra Knowledge, Flumotion, BaseCase and Magma Mobile, which have all adopted SoftLayer solutions and are able to deploy, scale and manage their Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solutions based on SoftLayer’s private network.

“We needed a scalable and reliable hosting provider with global network capabilities, more than just standard IT bells and whistles, to meet our growing demands,” said Etienne Jambou, Chief Marketing Officer for Magma Mobile. “SoftLayer provided us with a complete range of IT infrastructure services from development and production environments to web hosting and database management. Thanks to the robustness of SoftLayer’s infrastructure we have been able to remain focused on our core business.”

With the opening of the Amsterdam data center, SoftLayer will have 13 data centers and 16 PoPs worldwide. Each data center is functionally independent with distinct and redundant resources, as well as fully integrated with all SoftLayer facilities. The company’s global network fully integrates three distinct and redundant network architectures—public, private, and data center to data center—into the industry’s first Network-Within-a-Network topology for maximum accessibility, security, and control.

“The market opportunity for providing hosting and cloud solutions is still in its infancy,” said Melanie A. Posey, IDC Research Vice President, Hosting & Managed Network Services. “Companies like SoftLayer are taking the lead in establishing a globally accessible network that is helping push the adoption of these computing models to a broader mainstream audience. The addition of the new data center and capabilities will provide a foundation for users to securely run a complete gamut of solutions and services based on SoftLayer’s unique Intellectual Property (IP) and turnkey offerings.”

(The Hosting News) - SoftLayer® Technologies, the largest privately-owned hosting company in the world has chosen Amsterdam in The Netherlands for its European headquarters and first data center.  SoftLayer is investing $75 million initially in Holland and its European operations, which also includes new network PoPs in Amsterdam, London, and Frankfurt. In addition, the company has appointed Jonathan Wisler as General Manager for European Operations. The company will also be recruiting a further 25 digital professionals to staff the new data center and support operations.

Jonathan Wisler, an Information Technology veteran and now General Manager for SoftLayer in Europe comments, “Given the overall size of The Netherlands compared to the rest of Europe, this country is one of the most advanced in terms of Internet infrastructure and networking. We’re seeing a thriving community of both established digital entrepreneurs and start-ups here. There is a terrific buzz, particularly in Amsterdam, amongst digital professionals. It’s exciting, vibrant and it’s lively—the perfect environment from which to launch our European operations.”

As part of its European drive, SoftLayer has also joined the Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX). “As one of the world’s largest Internet exchanges, we’re delighted to welcome one of the world’s largest hosting companies into our Internet Exchange community,’” says Job Witteman AMS-IX Chief Executive Officer. He adds “SoftLayer’s choice and business potential in Europe show a clear sign that regardless of the financial markets, our (Internet) Industry and the city of Amsterdam offer one of the best environments for companies, technology and engineering talent to thrive.”

Jonathan Wisler explains, “SoftLayer is a name well-known in the US, but it’s already establishing a prestigious European reputation for delivering flexibility and control to businesses that live on a browser.  The technology approach is ground-breaking; the business model unique—we think that an increasing number of Dutch enterprises and organizations will quickly catch on to a new way of managing their digital infrastructures.”

“I think that Internet savvy small and medium sized businesses (SMBs), social media and gaming start-ups across Europe will be the early arrivals to our new Amsterdam data center. These are the types of companies that make up SoftLayer’s core customer base, companies that have their finger on the Internet pulse and need the levels of control and flexibility in the cloud that we can provide,” says Wisler.

At the end of October customers in Europe will be able to pre-order services to deploy, scale and manage their Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solutions based on SoftLayer’s unique public/private network infrastructure.

In early November, when the Amsterdam data center opens, SoftLayer will have 13 data centres and 16 PoPs worldwide.

(The Hosting News) – Dedicated server company SoftLayer has been busy expanding in the Asian-Pacific market, in part thanks to a lease with data center solutions provider Digital Realty Trust.

Digital Realty Trust announced the news on Monday. With the agreement, SoftLayer gets 48 thousand square of data center space to provide for services including managed hosting, cloud computing, and dedicated servers.

In making the announcement in a press release, Digital Realty Regional Head for Asia Pacific Kris Kumar discussed Digital Realty’s working relationship with SoftLayer, saying, “This project fulfills an important milestone in SotfLayer’s quest to keep up with international customer demand. Our lease agreement represents a huge boost of confidence in our capabilities to deliver not only in Singapore but in the overallAsia Pacific region.”

Meanwhile, SoftLayer Technologies Chief Strategy Officer George Karidis expressed the need for “proximity” to the company’s customers. Karidis went on to say,“We turned to Digital Realty to assist us in our international expansion efforts because their facilities gave us a way to rapidly deploy and get our data centre operations live quickly.”

“They also understood the importance of having this data centre operate to the highest standards, ensuring our customers get the same experience from every SoftLayer data centre globally,” he continued.

While SoftLayer’s 48 thousand square feet is plenty of data center space, it’s just part of Digital Realty’s presence in the area. Overall, the company facility is seven stories tall, representing a total of 370,500 square feet.

Recently, on its blog, SoftLayer gave viewers a look at its Singapore presence with a post titled “Global Expansion: Singapore is LIVE!” (You can view that here: http://blog.softlayer.com/2011/global-expansion-singapore-is-live/).

(The Hosting News) – SoftLayer® Technologies, the innovation leader in Cloud, Dedicated, and Managed hosting, today announced the upcoming opening of the company’s new data center in Singapore and network Points of Presence (PoPs) in Singapore, Tokyo, and Hong Kong. Beginning Sept. 23, customers can pre-order services in the new data center, to be deployed when the data center and PoPs officially “go live” on Oct. 3.

“We are excited to bring our unique solutions to hosting to the Asia-Pacific region,” said Lance Crosby, Chief Executive Officer for SoftLayer. “We’ve had an international customer base for quite some time, with almost half of our 23,000 customers coming from more than 140 countries besides the U.S. But we couldn’t be happier to now have a truly international presence, putting our industry-leading solutions so much closer to our customers and their countless end users.”

Designated SNG01, the new data center features the following:

SNG01 and the Tokyo and Hong Kong PoPs feature connectivity from multiple Tier-1 network carriers, including NTT, Tata, and Equinix, with direct network connections to SoftLayer facilities in San Jose and Los Angeles.
