After Domain Transfers, Go Daddy Hopes to Fix Things
(The Hosting News) – Top web host and registrar Go Daddy has come under heat for its changing of positions on the controversial Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). Yesterday was dubbed “Dump Go Daddy Day” by SOPA opponents who sought to punish the web registrar for what they’ve interpreted as an inconsistent stance on the legislation by the company.
During the course of the day, website owners were encouraged to transfer their domains away from Go Daddy.
The web host initially supported SOPA but backed off its support last week.
Clarifying his company’s stance in a statement yesterday, Go Daddy CEO Warren Adelman stated, “Go Daddy opposes SOPA because the legislation has not fulfilled its basic requirement to build a consensus among stake-holders in the technology and Internet communities.”
With many web users disenchanted with Go Daddy, the company is hoping to fix things.
“Our company regrets the loss of any of our customers, who remain our highest priority, and we hope to repair those relationships and win back their business over time,” Adelman went on to say.
The idea to transfer domains away from the company appeared to originate on social site Reddit.com. Meanwhile, some Go Daddy competitors seized the moment to gain against the top web host.
Today, web host Namecheap.com reported that it had received over 27 thousand domain transfers on Thursday. The company had previously committed to donate two dollar for every transfer the web host received during the course of yesterday to Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital rights organization.
Opponents of SOPA have argued that the bill would harm innovation on the web and limit free speech by placing unfair restrictions and burdens on both internet providers and tech startups.
The law would allow the U.S. Justice Department to force internet providers to cut access to sites accused of providing infringing material upon seeking a court order.
Debate on SOPA is expected to continue when the U.S. House of Representatives returns from its current recess.

Online Backup Search tested and reviewed ZipCloud (http://goo.gl/75lxD) to learn more about the company and it’s services.
While reviewing ZipCloud the Online Backup Search editors found that ZipCloud performs well because it is easy to use and has a clean design. The review goes into detail about how the online backup works as well as the cloud storage. Overall the review is good, but their are a few criticisms about how the addons work and how the backup features are limited in the Mac version.
Online Backup Search downloaded and tested ZipCloud in order to provide a thorough review of the product. Steven Johnson, editor for Online Backup Search said, “We like the way ZipCloud was developed. It takes advantage of cloud storage and online backup in the same product. They could make some improvements, but it is a very simple and great product. I would say that it a great fit for home users.”
Steven talked about how the file sharing worked with ZipCloud saying it was easy to use and only required that the other users have a ZipCloud account.
“Overall we are pleased with ZipCloud. The product is fully functional and works simply and easily. We expect that they will keep improving the product as time goes on.” Said Steven.

Prolexic Issues Advisory and Releases Scanner
(The Hosting News) – Prolexic Technologies, the global leader in Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) mitigation services, today announced it has issued a threat advisory for Dirt Jumper, a high-risk DDoS toolkit that can be used to launch application layer attacks on web sites. Prolexic has also developed a security-scanning tool that can be used to detect Dirt Jumper command and control servers. The threat advisory and scanner can be downloaded free of charge from www.prolexic.com/threatadvisories.
Dirt Jumper is a prepackaged toolkit that has evolved from the Russkill strain of malware. It is now widely available on various underground websites and retails for as little as US$150. Dirt Jumper can be spread via spam, exploit kits, fake downloads and can be pushed out to machines already infected with other forms of malware.
“The Dirt Jumper DDoS toolkit is currently one of the most aggressive malware strains used by DDoS attackers globally,” said Neal Quinn, vice president of operations at Prolexic. “Increasingly, we are seeing this tool used against clients worldwide and it is likely to become more widespread and effective as distribution spreads.”
After analyzing the Dirt Jumper v3 DDoS Toolkit, the Prolexic Security Engineering and Response Team (PLXSERT) categorized it as a high-risk threat. The Prolexic team identified the newest variant, known as Dirt Jumper September and uncovered that it had updated functionalities as well as an enhanced control panel, which makes it simple for attackers to use. Prolexic’s Dirt Jumper Threat Advisory provides an analysis of the payload and also gives a detailed breakdown of attack signatures by attack type, as well as information on remediation and recommended mitigation strategies.
PLXSERT has also written a custom-scanning tool called Dirt Dozer (dirtdozer.py) that enables security research teams and engineers to validate if any suspected HTTP command and control servers utilize any strains of the malware. As a public service to business enterprises and organizations worldwide, Prolexic’s Dirt Dozer scanner is being made available free of charge and can be downloaded from www.prolexic.com/threatadvisories.
Prolexic Threat Advisories
Prolexic recently launched a service that provides its subscribers with regular Threat Advisories. Compiled by the Prolexic Security Engineering and Response Team (PLXSERT), on-going advisories will help subscribers stay informed and vigilant so they can make better, proactive decisions.
Designed to provide early warnings of new or modified DDoS attack signatures and scripts recently observed by PLXSERT, each Threat Advisory contains a detailed description of the type of attack, a list of attack signatures, and the specific network infrastructure or application that it targets. In addition, Prolexic’s DDoS mitigation experts also offer insight into the nature of each type of attack, as well as provide specific warnings as to how the attack will affect businesses and enterprises of different sizes and infrastructures. PLXSERT also provides threat remediation tips to help subscribers not only recognize the new attack signatures, but also proactively defend against them.
“The more our subscribers understand about DDoS attacks, the more they will be able to make informed decisions about DDoS protection and mitigation strategies,” said Paul Sop, chief technology officer at Prolexic. “As the industry’s premium provider, Prolexic is ideally positioned to provide this unique level of insight and intelligence to our customers.”
New Threat Advisories will be distributed to subscribers via email and will also be posted on the Prolexic Portal, a password protected, subscriber-only resource.
About the Prolexic Security Engineering & Response Team (PLXSERT)
PLXSERT monitors malicious cyber threats globally and analyzes DDoS attacks using proprietary techniques and equipment. Through data forensics and post attack analysis, PLXSERT is able to build a global view of DDoS attacks, which is shared with customers. By identifying the sources and associated attributes of individual attacks, the PLXSERT team helps organizations adopt best practices and make more informed, proactive decisions about DDoS threats.

Namecheap Discusses Domain Transfers
(The Hosting News) – Domain name registrar Namecheap is proud to announce that it has processed a total of 27,209 transfers on Move Your Domain Day, its December 29th initiative to raise awareness against the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA).
Additionally, Namecheap announced that once 25,000 transfers had been processed that they would double the donation to $2 per transfer. This resulted in a tremendous final push among Internet users and Namecheap customers, and the 25,000 goal was easily reached by the end of the evening, resulting in a minimum $50,000 donation to EFF.
Namecheap’s CEO, Richard Kirkendall, said, “We are ecstatic at the response we have received from the Internet community. The Internet is speaking and we’re proud to facilitate that and at the same time help a wonderful organization such as EFF continue their fight against SOPA, PIPA, and other overbroad, ill-considered legislation.”
In Namecheap’s December 22nd official statement denouncing the proposed SOPA legislation, Kirkendall likened the passing of the bill to “detonating a nuclear bomb on the Internet when only a surgical strike is necessary.”
As a result, Namecheap released a coupon code (SOPASucks) to encourage those patronizing SOPA-supporting domain name registrars to transfer their domains to Namecheap. Since the release of the coupon code on December 22nd, over 70,000 domains have been transferred to Namecheap.
Notably, the largest gains for Namecheap occurred on Move Your Domain Day, a campaign Namecheap announced earlier this week after Internet users rallied around December 29th as the date for users to move to a new domain name registrar.
Namecheap will continue to honor the SOPAsucks coupon code for $6.99 .COM, .NET, .ORG, .INFO, and .BIZ domain transfers through December 31st, though the coupon may be extended for an even longer period of time. Donations to the Electronic Frontier Foundation will continue through 12 PM EST on December 30th and Namecheap will continue to donate $2 per inbound transfer throughout this time.
“From the first day Namecheap opened for business, our customers have always come first.” said Kirkendall. “I would like to thank each and every one of our customers during this campaign for making their voices heard, voting with their dollars, and supporting EFF in their fight for our digital freedoms.”
Shari Steele, Executive Director of EFF, stated, “EFF is pleased to support Namecheap’s efforts to bring attention to the proposed SOPA legislation and its consequences for Internet users worldwide. With the funds donated from the MoveYourDomainDay effort, EFF will continue to defend your right to free expression in the digital world.”

How To Know About The Best Internet Hosting Providers
How to View Disk Space Usage in cPanel
Unless you have a web hosting deal with unlimited disk space, you have likely been concerned about conserving disk space at one time or another. Even if you do have unlimited disk space at your disposal, it is still sometimes helpful to know how much space your websites are using and which sections in particular are taking up the most space.
For dedicated server and VPS users, there are several ways to check disk space, but a shared hosting user may be limited to the web-based control panel. Fortunately, cPanel provides a disk space usage section that is integrated with the control panel’s file manager tool. With it you can view your total disk space usage and also look at how much space each sub-directory within your home directory is using.
The first item in the bar graph will show you “files in the home directory”. That includes all files in your account. The second refers to files in hidden directories (those with a “.” before their name). It then lists several of the directories in your system, including the directory containing your website files. It will also show you the total disk space usage for your MySQL databases and mailing lists. Finally, at the bottom, it shows total disk space usage, and below that, it will show your quota. If you have unlimited space available, the quota will be “999,999.00 MB quota limit”
For any of the directories listed, you can click on their name to open your file manager in a new tab/window. The file manager displays individual directory and file sizes. For more information about the disk usage feature or other components of cPanel, see the cPanel documentation.
Go Daddy Continues to Feel Heat Over SOPA Stance
(The Hosting News) – Despite pulling its support of the controversial anti-piracy legislation known as SOPA (the Stop Online Piracy Act) last week, top world web host and domain registrar Go Daddy continues to feel heat concerning the company’s stance on the matter.
Earlier this month, a user of the social networking site Reddit.com suggested that users transfer their web sites away from Go Daddy on Thursday, December 29th. The day has been coined “Dump Go Daddy Day” by online activists and media outlets.
SOPA has long been unpopular among the Internet community since its introduction in Congress.
Critics of the bill have argued that SOPA would hurt innovation on the internet by adding unwarranted oversight requirements, overall hurting freedom of speech on the web.
Go Daddy initially supported the legislation. However, when the company backed off its support last week, Go Daddy CEO Warren Adelman stated, “Fighting online piracy is of the utmost importance, which is why Go Daddy has been working to help craft revisions to this legislation – but we can clearly do better.”
“It’s very important that all Internet stakeholders work together on this. Getting it right is worth the wait. Go Daddy will support it when and if the Internet community supports it,” Adelman continued.
While the backlash against the web host may increase today, the company may have already felt a loss of support among some customers. Last week, tech site CNET reported on 21 thousand domains being transferred away from the web host in the matter of a day. The statistics were tracked by domain record keeper dailychanges.com.
Meanwhile, other web hosts have tried to take advantage of what many see as a lack of a firm stance by the top web host. Web hosts opposed to SOPA, including Domain.com and Namecheap have urged users to transfer away from Go Daddy due to the company’s previous lack of opposition to the bill. Earlier this week, Namecheap announced that it would donate one dollar to the Electronic Frontier Foundation for each domain transferred to its services today.
The Stop Online Piracy Act was initially introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives in October. The act would give the U.S. Department of Justice the authority via court orders to force internet providers to pull access to websites accused of containing infringing content. Those opposed to the bill argue that it wouldn’t allow a suitable process for the accused to defend their actions.
A similar bill called the Protect IP Act is currently being considered in the U.S. Senate. The Protect IP Act passed committee but has yet to be approved by the entire Senate. When the U.S. House of Representatives returns from its current recess, consideration of SOPA is expected to continue. To view Go Daddy’s explanation of their current stance on the Stop Online Piracy Act, view a press release by the company here (GoDaddy.com).
