How to Setup Anonymous FTP with cPanel

Posted by: Jennifer  :  Category: Budget Hosting, Cheap Web Hosting, Dedicated Hosting, Reseller Hosting, Shared Hosting, Top 10 Hosting, VPS Hosting

Anonymous FTP (file transfer protocol) is a type of FTP connection that does not require the user to login to the server. For security reasons, this is generally a bad idea, as it gives unknown users access, even if it is limited, to your system. In some situations, however, the benefits may outweigh the risks.

If you must have anonymous FTP, cPanel makes it easy to get it up and running. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Login to cPanel and scroll down to the section labeled “Files”
  2. Click “Anonymous FTP”
  3. To allow users read-only access, check the first box labeled “Allow anonymous access to ftp.yourdomain.tld”
  4. If you also want users to be able to anonymously upload files (a really bad idea), check the second box labeled “Allow anonymous uploads to ftp.yourdomain.tld/incoming”
  5. Click “Save Settings” to finish
  6. Optionally, add a welcome message for anonymous users and click “save message”

After you have given anonymous access, any files you put into your /pub directory will be available for user downloads. This is useful if you host a mirror for free software or provide other free download servers for your users.

Users will be able to download files from within their web browsers, from FTP clients, or from desktop file managers that support the FTP protocol. Windows Explorer, Mac OS X Finder, and most Linux file managers (Nautilus, Dolphin, Thunar, etc) all have FTP support.

Because of the potential for security problems, you should only use anonymous FTP if you absolutely need it. If you do not, you should check your settings to make sure it is disabled, as some hosts may enable it by default.

(The Hosting News) – Developing cloud solutions is surely a complex technical matter. Well, today, colocation and data center provider Interxion continued to make it easier by expanding the availability of cloud testing by opening a new Cloud Testlab.

The project is located at Interxion’s London data center.

It also happens to be the company’s second and was the result of a partnership between Interxion and other companies, including cloud solutions provider Flexiant.

Hardware used at the facility was provided by Supermicro and Boston Limited.

Commenting on the matter in a press release, Interxion UK Managing Director Greg McCulloch stated, “The rapid adoption of cloud computing has seen cloud-based services become a central part of business strategy.”

“The launch of this UK Cloud Testlab deployment further reflects our commitment to the cloud and offers both customers and prospects the opportunity to test and develop cloud services at high speed and with best-in-class performance guarantees,” he continued.

In particular, the center will make use of IaaS Cloud software Extility by Flexiant.

The testing solution was initially launched earlier this year.

With unveiling of the second lab, the company is offering access and testing free for a limited time.

The colocation provider has data centers in European locations including Dublin, Frankfurt, London, Paris, Madrid, and more. Just earlier this month, Interxion announced plans for an additional data center in Frankfurt, Germany. For more information on Interxion’s Cloud Testlab, visit:  http://www.interxion.com/Cloudtestlab.html

(The Hosting News) – The ICANN Board of Directors today passed a resolution to review a proposal from a special working group that would create a support system for deserving applicants of new gTLDs, many of whom are expected to be in developing countries. The Board further directed the President and CEO to develop a detailed plan by December 8, for the scoping and implementation of the recommendations.

“It is very important that deserving applicants, such as those from emerging economies, be included in the new gTLD program,” said Rod Beckstrom, President and Chief Executive Officer. “It is necessary to encourage diverse participation in this new program and to broaden the scope of our multi-stakeholder model.”

The ICANN Board of Directors also made clear today that it wants to enhance the organization’s policies relating to conflicts of interest, ethics, confidentiality and an overall code of conduct.

“We want to achieve a Gold Standard in terms of conflicts and ethics practices,” said Steve Crocker, Chair of the ICANN Board. “Specifically we are working on a system which will lay out how Directors interested in specific new generic Top Level Domain applications will be restricted from participation in the deliberations and decisions regarding the new gTLD Program.”

In closing ICANN’s 42nd public meeting in Dakar, Senegal, the Board passed a resolution stating that, “ICANN will treat decisions relating to approving any single new gTLD application in an ethical manner and with care to avoid even the appearance of a conflict of interest.”

ICANN’s next public meeting will occur March 11-16 in San Jose, Costa Rica.

About ICANN:

ICANN’s mission is to ensure a stable, secure and unified global Internet. To reach another person on the Internet you have to type an address into your computer – a name or a number. That address has to be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN coordinates these unique identifiers across the world. Without that coordination we wouldn’t have one global Internet. ICANN was formed in 1998. It is a not-for-profit public-benefit corporation with participants from all over the world dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable and interoperable. It promotes competition and develops policy on the Internet’s unique identifiers. ICANN doesn’t control content on the Internet. It cannot stop spam and it doesn’t deal with access to the Internet. But through its coordination role of the Internet’s naming system, it does have an important impact on the expansion and evolution of the Internet. Redirecting to Broadband: FCC Approves Change

Posted by: Jennifer  :  Category: Budget Hosting, Cheap Web Hosting, Dedicated Hosting, Reseller Hosting, Shared Hosting, Top 10 Hosting, VPS Hosting

(The Hosting News) – In the past, the U.S. government has invested in telephone subsidization, helping spread communication in the area throughout the country. Now it appears it’s past that time. On Thursday, the FCC approved a plan to shift the funds towards broadband investment.

How exactly are the funds raised? According to the Wall Street Journal, the money is from a smaller fee charged within phone bills, all going to the Universal Service Fund.

With the FCC’s goal, doing this can get four and a half billion dollars annually – all aimed at providing broadband to 18 million U.S. homes that don’t currently have it.

Outlining the plan on their official website, the FCC stated, “Broadband has gone from being a luxury to a necessity for full participation in our economy and society – for all Americans. For that reason, the FCC has adopted comprehensive reforms of its Universal Service Fund (USF) and Intercarrier Compensation (ICC) systems to accelerate broadband build-out to the 18 million Americans living in rural areas who currently have no access to robust broadband infrastructure.”

In comments provided by Business Week, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski stated, “We are taking a system designed for the Alexander Graham Bell era of rotary telephones and modernizing it for the era of Steve Jobs and the Internet future he imagined.”

Despite the good efforts, the initiative (called Connecting America) isn’t without controversy. The Wall Street Journal reported that consumer advocacy group Consumer Union argued against the move, saying it would hurt consumers.

In August, the FCC released a report on broadband in the U.S., indicating that broadband providers have been more accurately advertising prices as compared to just a couple years ago. To view more on the FCC’s plan, visit: http://www.fcc.gov/encyclopedia/connecting-america

Opus Interactive Steps Up to Tier III Data Center

Posted by: Jennifer  :  Category: Budget Hosting, Cheap Web Hosting, Dedicated Hosting, Reseller Hosting, Shared Hosting, Top 10 Hosting, VPS Hosting

(The Hosting News) – Opus Interactive is leaving its original location in Portland’s Northwest Industrial District to move into 80,000-square-foot, 8-megawatt data center located in the Pearl District. The new facility will mean Opus Interactive can say “yes” to current customers who have been asking Opus Interactive to host more of their servers, and take on new customers, too.

“We’ve had to turn away colocation business from potential customers who had more gear than we can accommodate in the old data center,” said Eric Hulbert, CEO of Opus Interactive. “Now we’ll be able to extend our cloud services to clients who need more capacity and have more stringent needs for redundancy, seismic mitigation and security.”

The Brewery Blocks data center is a TIA-942 certified telecom facility and Tier III commercial data center. Originally built by the telecom division of industrial conglomerate Tyco International, and now owned by Tata Communications, the data center was planned at the height of the telecom boom. By the time it opened in 2002, both the telecom industry and the Internet bubble had imploded, and there was far less demand for high-grade Internet connectivity than just two years earlier.

Now it’s a different story. Both large and medium-sized companies demand the kinds of services that the Brewery Blocks data center was built to provide. Opus Interactive intends to take full advantage of that shift.

“We’re seeing a strong surge in Portland’s data center and hosting market with a lot of interest coming from businesses giving up on Bay Area colocation and hosting providers,” said Mark Brody, founder and chairman of Opus Interactive. “We intend to meet that demand with this move.”

The Brewery Blocks data center offers:

  • TIA-942 certification, the highest level designated for a commercial telecom facility by the Telecommunications Industry Association
  • Dark fiber connections to the Pittock Building, Portland’s primary interconnection exchange point
  • Access to Tata’s undersea cable to Singapore, and to Tata’s fiber network spanning both North America and Asia
  • High security, including entry via ID card and monitored by CCTV, biometric access to private cages, and an industrial-strength fire suppression system
  • 2N redundancy and robust power backup

“As part of the nation’s critical communications infrastructure, this facility is considered ‘hardened’, and you really see what that means when you take a walk through the building. It’s quite impressive,” said Brody.

Opus Interactive plans to complete its move to the Brewery Blocks by January 2012, and will continue to serve customers’ needs throughout the carefully choreographed transition. Opus Interactive’s services include:

  • Managed services and colocation, including managed hardware, virtualized servers and both Windows & Unix custom hosting on dedicated servers
  • Cloud computing services
  • Data backup and recovery services (DR services)
  • Green IT hosting
  • Email hosting
  • Shared web hosting
  • Metro Optical Ethernet, private lines and multi-location DSL

Apart from the technological wonders of the Brewery Blocks data center, Opus Interactive executives note that their clients will enjoy visiting the Pearl District data center, surrounded by great restaurants, hotels, shopping and leisure pursuits.

“For our out-of-town customers, there are so many great places nearby to stay, eat and relax while working on their gear,” said Hulbert.
