(The Hosting News) – Thousands of Italian-based internet sites were brought down after a fire erupted at one of Italy’s largest server providers on Friday.

The incident caused both the primary and backup power to shut off at Aruba’s primary serer farm in Arezzo, Italy. The fire last nearly three hours as firefighters worked to put it out.

Despite the interruption in service, Aruba says that no stored data was harmed during the blaze. Sites are slowly but surely coming back online after some 11 hours of downtime.

The cause of the fire is still undetermined.

Meanwhile, consumer advocacy group Codacons is exploring a class-action suit for the incident that delayed companies from accessing emails and other vital information.

With over one million actively hosted sites, Aruba’s is a top provider in Italy, the Czech Republic, and in the Slovak Republic.

Amazon Details Cloud Crash In New Report

Posted by: Jennifer  :  Category: Budget Hosting, Cheap Web Hosting, Dedicated Hosting, Reseller Hosting, Shared Hosting, Top 10 Hosting, VPS Hosting

(The Hosting News) – Amazon has released a report that details last week’s server crash that resulted in massive downtime for sites hosted on its cloud-based Amazon Web Services.

The company reported that the outage was due to incorrectly executing a traffic shift while performing a capacity upgrade on Amazon Web Service’s primary network.

The accident was catastrophic for services reliant on the cloud platform. The report states, “Unlike a normal network interruption, this change disconnected both the primary and secondary network simultaneously, leaving the affected nodes completely isolated from one another”.

In the aftermath, Amazon was able to contain the crash to fewer availability zones and a majority of the services were back up and running by later on the 21st.

After detailing its response, AWS described efforts to improve its system in order to prevent similar events from occurring in the future.

“We will audit our change process and increase the automation to prevent this mistake from happening in the future”, AWS stated.

The company also noted there was room to improve when it came to coordinating with its customers and stated, “We switched to more regular updates part of the way through this event and plan to continue with similar frequency of updates in the future. In addition, we are already working on how we can staff our developer support team more expansively in an event such as this, and organize to provide early and meaningful information, while still avoiding speculation.”

The AWS Team apologized for the inconvenience and concluded by noting, “We know how critical our services are to our customers’ businesses and we will do everything we can to learn from this event and use it to drive improvement across our services. As with any significant operational issue, we will spend many hours over the coming days and weeks improving our understanding of the details of the various parts of this event and determining how to make changes to improve our services and processes”.

With the apology, AWS has promised a 10 day credit to customers effected by the outage.

The recent crash with Amazon Web Services has resulted with some analysts questioning the overall stability of cloud and what can be done to improve it.

Yahoo’s Delicious Acquired By YouTube Founders

Posted by: Jennifer  :  Category: Budget Hosting, Cheap Web Hosting, Dedicated Hosting, Reseller Hosting, Shared Hosting, Top 10 Hosting, VPS Hosting

(The Hosting News) – As part of their latest internet venture AVOS, YouTube co-founders Steven Chen and Chad Hurley have acquired Yahoo’s Delicious, the bookmarking site that allows users to save, explore, and share their favorite things online.

Chen and Hurley have teamed up to create the new company AVOS and it appears that Delicious will take a leading role in its development.

AVOS Ceo and co-YouTube founder Chad Hurley stated, “We’re excited to work with this fantastic community and take Delicious to the next level”.

The site had faced the threat of closure under Yahoo, who planned to shut it down had they not sold it by July.

Some analysts believe the site was neglected under Yahoo, all while the popular internet search engine faced job cuts and large competition from main competitor Google.

Yahoo is expected to maintain the site until sometime in July when AVOS takes charge.

In a recent statement, Yahoo noted, “We continuously evaluate and prioritize our portfolio of products and services, and do plan to shut down some products in the coming months such as Yahoo Buzz, our Traffic APIs, and others”.

Jease CMS Launches Version 2.0

Posted by: Jennifer  :  Category: Budget Hosting, Cheap Web Hosting, Dedicated Hosting, Reseller Hosting, Shared Hosting, Top 10 Hosting, VPS Hosting

(The Hosting News) – Jease is a ZK Framework based open-source Content-Management-System created by Maik Jablonski which is driven by the power of Java. Jease means “Java with Ease”, so Jease promises to keep simple things simple and hard things (j)easy.

Jease 2.0 is a big leap forward transforming Jease into a full-featured Content-Management-System. It started as Content-Management-Framework with a simple example CMS on top of it two years ago. Over the time Jease matured more and more into a feature-rich Content-Management-System while preserving ease of use, customization and maintainability.

The main theme for the 2.0 release line is to continue the journey from a developer oriented Content-Management-Framework to a user-friendly Content-Management-System which makes publishing content as easy as possible. Jease targets Java web developers who want to get things getting done without any headaches.

New features include:

Instant Preview

You can now preview all changes without the need to save them beforehand. This works by storing a copy of the current content object in the session and rendering it when present. This will reduce the number of stored revisions for minor changes. Additionally this enables switching revisions and previewing of them without the need to re-save.

Link Checker

In order to check the validity of external links, a link checker is included. It is possible to change broken links directly using the link checker, hence keeping your site in a healthy state is much easier.

Redirection Service

Jease allows you to create complex redirect rules based on the power of Java regular expressions through the administration interface. The redirection service is very efficient, so it is not necessary to configure any redirection rules in your web server.

10 Gigabit Ethernet Available on eRacks

Posted by: Jennifer  :  Category: Budget Hosting, Cheap Web Hosting, Dedicated Hosting, Reseller Hosting, Shared Hosting, Top 10 Hosting, VPS Hosting

(The Hosting News) – eRacks today announces the availability of 10 gigabit ethernet (10GbE) across the board on its entire line of enterprise-grade servers, available in three flavors: CX4, RJ-45 (both copper) or SFP+ (fiber optic.)

Previously, mainstream servers were limited to 1 gbps of bandwidth per network adapter, forcing systems administrators to resort to the cumbersome procedure of bonding NICs when more bandwidth was required. Now, eRacks offers 10x that performance, all through a single port.

eRacks offers a host of choices when deciding on a 10GbE solution. Those who require only short range connections are free to choose from CX4 or the fiber optic interface SFP+, and will most likely want SFP+ when a low-power low-latency connection is desired. Conversely, those who require up to 100m of cabling will want to explore the RJ-45 option.

10GbE is crucial for any system that needs to move large amounts of data back and forth across a network. 10GbE makes a great foundation for network attached storage, for example, and works exceptionally well with technologies such as iSCSI. 10GbE is also highly useful for the rendering of high definition audio and video across a network and can easily find a home in any studio.

Now is an ideal time to invest in 10GbE, as costs are finally coming down and adoption is becoming much more common.

About eRacks Open Source Systems

Telehouse Exceeds 100 Gigabits Milestone

Posted by: Jennifer  :  Category: Budget Hosting, Cheap Web Hosting, Dedicated Hosting, Reseller Hosting, Shared Hosting, Top 10 Hosting, VPS Hosting

(The Hosting News) – Telehouse America, the United States’ leading provider of dedicated data centers, international Internet exchanges, and managed IT services, announces today that its public peering interconnection point, New York International Internet Exchange (NYIIX), has consistently exceeded the 100Gbps (gigabits per second) daily traffic volume milestone this year, currently at approximately 127Gbps, essentially doubling the traffic volume in under 18 months. This furthers NYIIX’s position as the largest public Internet exchange in the New York Metro Market and in the top 10 of the world’s largest peering points.

NYIIX has reached an important milestone, which further solidifies the strong presence Telehouse’s connection points have on a domestic and global scale. Since its establishment in 1996, NYIIX has been the busiest and longest-running neutral exchange point in New York, with about 130 active peering members from around the world.

NYIIX is one of the largest neutral Internet exchange points on the US East coast and is operated by Telehouse. Its mission is to provide the Internet community with a neutral, scalable peering infrastructure and to assure reliable stable Internet connectivity.  Located in downtown New York City, NYIIX provides fully redundant equipment and fiber connections to the most popular local carrier hotels: 25 Broadway, 60 Hudson St., and 111 Eighth Ave. in Manhattan, 7 Teleport on Staten Island, and 85 10th Avenue located in the Chelsea District of Manhattan. Our Chelsea Center is the most recent addition to the Telehouse family.

In addition to public peering, NYIIX offers private peering over VLAN, enabling secure private peering or direct bandwidth over the NYIIX. Peering exchanges, such as the NYIIX, were formed to facilitate the connection of independent networks for the exchange of data and routing information without using the crowded public networks. Telehouse Peering allows customers to interconnect over its layer-2 switch to many transit, content and application providers, at multiple locations, to improve network performance and cut costs.

“Exceeding 100 gigabits per second of traffic is the result of our continuing ability to increase NYIIX members along with their increasing traffic volume,” says Akio Sugeno, Senior Director of Internet Engineering and Operations Business Development. “Such an accomplishment proves that NYIIX is one of the most important IXP’s in the United States.”

The NYIIX platform is regularly updated to meet the growing technology requirements of the industry and currently operates Brocade RX series switches. The platform supports IPv4 and IPv6 connections and with bilateral or multilateral peering arrangements. Sflow capability will be added this year and some expansion plans are under consideration.

Could Apple Be Creating iCloud?

Posted by: Jennifer  :  Category: Budget Hosting, Cheap Web Hosting, Dedicated Hosting, Reseller Hosting, Shared Hosting, Top 10 Hosting, VPS Hosting

(The Hosting News) – According to Om Malk, senior writer for GigaOm, Apple may have paid four and a half million dollars to purchase the domain name “iCloud.com” from Xcerion. Xcerion used “icloud.com” to host its cloud-based storage system.

Xcerion recently changed its domain from “iCloud” to “CloudMe”, although icloud.com is still listed as property of Xcerion.

Analysts believe that Apple may have gone through with the move in preparation for launching a new media storage service that could host users’ music and videos.

When asked by TechCrunch if the domain purchase had occurred or was in the works, Xcerion neither admitted or denied it and stated, “We decided we needed a name change to better reflect our new focus on files and storage, where the desktop is just one of many clients to access files and content stored in CloudMe”.

The representative from Xcerion then went on to display the company’s new motto for CloudMe by stating, “If you have any files to share with me – Just CloudMe :)”.

There have been some signs that Apple has been getting more serious about cloud computing in the recent past.

Most recently, cloud-guru Kevin Timmons (who managed data centers for Microsoft) joined Apple. Timmons is expected to help Apple work on developing its cloud infrastructure. Apple’s new data centers are also expected to aid in the development.

Future cloud services by the company may also compete with Amazon’s cloud-based hosting services.
